ABOUT UNIVERSITY PARK
University Park shares the name Park Cities, known as “The Bubble,” with Highland Park. Seemingly symbolic of this are the high walls built along Central Expressway and The Tollway to protect the Park Cities from noise pollution.
University Park began as a cluster of homes surrounding Southern Methodist University (SMU), founded in 1915. Since the 1940s, the population and area of University Park has stabilized at approximately 24,000 residents. The city is now surrounded by Dallas on three sides and the town of Highland Park to the south.
This family-oriented city is served primarily by the Highland Park Independent School District (HPISD). The UP middle schools, McCulloch Intermediate School and Highland Park Middle School, and the continually nationally ranked Highland Park High School, are shared by HP and UP.
Two HPISD elementary schools, Hyer and University Park, are located in University Park, and a small portion of UP, east of North Central Expressway, is served by the Dallas Independent School District (DISD).
SMU is the home of The Meadows Museum, which houses the largest collection of Spanish art in the United States, and the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum is located on the campus. The University offers many cultural programs and continuing education for UP adults, many of whom are alumni.
